Olympic Trials - Up for twin record spins?

With all the buzz over the upcoming U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, it would be easy to forget about the other monumental competition taking place in Eugene this week — the 34th annual Prefontaine Classic.

The prestigious meet will be held Sunday with the usual array of top U.S. and international stars lining up for a chance to tap into the famed Hayward Field magic before the Trials and Beijing Olympics.

This is not, however, your typical Pre meet.

In what meet director Tom Jordan is calling a “once-every-25-years” occurrence, two Ethiopian distance runners have chosen the Pre as the venue for world-record attempts in the men’s 10,000 meters and women’s 5,000.

Those races will be contested in the morning before the start of the regular meet schedule at 12:30 p.m.
