DyeStat Discussions - EP1056 - Charli Koseoglu
Published by
Charli Koseoglu, a senior at Academy for Technology and the Classics and an 11-time New Mexico Class 2A state champion as well as the classification record holder in the javelin throw at 137-9 (42.00m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss winning four individual titles May 10-11 at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, then joining her mother Jennifer in attending the final day of competition May 12 at the Pac-12 Championships at Potts Field in Boulder, Colo. Koseoglu was the high-point scorer in Class 2A and helped Academy for Technology and the Classics win the program's second team title in three years with 58 points. She reflects on helping The Phoenix capture the Class 2A team title in 2022 and contributing individual championships in the 100-meter dash, 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles to a roster consisting of mostly upperclassmen. Koseoglu, who won the 100 and 200 for the third year in a row, in addition to prevailing in the javelin and long jump, explains how special it was to win a team championship with her sophomore sister Willow, who finished second in the 200 and third in the 100. She revisits being disqualified for a false start in the 100 hurdles prelims, and how proud she was to regroup and achieve the Class 2A all-time mark in the opening round of the javelin final, eclipsing the 2010 record of 132-7 (40.41m) held by Tori Tucker from Floyd High, along with defending her titles in the 100 and 200. Koseoglu, who also achieved the second-best javelin throw in her career with a 131-10 (40.19m) effort in the third round, expresses gratitude for Santa Fe High for allowing the Academy for Technology and the Classics student-athletes train during the spring season at their facility, since The Phoenix doesn't have a home track. She also shares the challenges of coordinating training throughout the year, and how appreciative Koseoglu has been to be mentored by hurdles/sprint coach Stacey Price and multis coach Curtis Beach, as well as her father Tolga and the coaching staff at Academy for Technology and the Classics. Koseoglu also explains the balancing act during the past month of studying for Advanced Placement exams, finalizing her college decision and training for the state championship meet. She looks forward to competing June 6-8 at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, and having another opportunity to run the 100 hurdles, in addition to improving on her heptathlon debut of 3,956 points from April at the Arcadia Invitational, and her aspiration of surpassing the 4,000-point barrier.
