A California native and economics professor at the University of Louisville, Barry Haworth takes a somewhat unusual approach as coach of the Assumption High School cross country squad.

Haworth preaches “the process,” choosing to focus more on his runners’ effort and progress than their times. The team typically trains in a pack, sometimes letting slower runners lead the way as a means of encouragement.

And there’s those crazy socks he wears, with loud colors and all kinds of messages and designs.
