NOTE ON THE NEWS - VIAGRA UNDER SCRUTINY AS PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUG
Used with permission.
A
front page story in yesterday's New York Times by veteran Olympic
sports reporter, Jere Longman, reported that drug testing authorities
are evaluating whether the popular drug Viagra, prescribed for men with
erectile dysfunction, may enhance more than just sexual performance.
The drug, which relaxes blood vessels and improves blood flow, is now
under consideration by the World Anti-Doping Agency's and could be
added to their banned substances and methods list.
"Basically,
it allows you to compete with a sea level, or near-sea level, aerobic
capacity at altitude," reseacher Kenneth W. Rundell told the Times.
"It clearly provides an unfair advantage, at least at altitude,"
Rundell added.
